Project: "Spirit of the Pony Express" — A Feature-Length Documentary

Situation: While conducting research for an action-adventure screenplay, I discovered a significant and timely piece of American history: 2010 marked the 150th anniversary of the legendary Pony Express. What began as a point of historical curiosity quickly ignited a much larger creative vision. I felt compelled to do more than just write a fictional story; I needed to honor this incredible legacy in a real and meaningful way.
Task: My mission evolved from screenwriter to filmmaker. I set out to create, write, and direct a feature-length documentary, "Spirit of the Pony Express," that would capture the enduring spirit of this pivotal chapter in American history for a modern audience. The challenge was immense: I had a powerful concept but no funding or organizational structure to produce a cross-country documentary film.
Action: I served as the Writer, Director, and Executive Producer, driving the project from a dream into a reality through a combination of creative vision and entrepreneurial initiative.
Conceptualized the Film: I conceived the documentary's core narrative, envisioning a journey that would intertwine stunning historical reenactments with a modern-day cross-country ride, connecting the past to the present.
Established a Non-Profit: To provide a legitimate foundation for the project and enable fundraising, I established a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. This crucial step allowed us to seek grants and build partnerships.
Secured Foundational Funding: I successfully wrote and obtained a grant from the National Park Service, a powerful endorsement of the film's cultural and historical importance. This vital funding was the catalyst that allowed production to begin.
Directed the Cross-Country Production: As director, I led our team on a journey across the country, capturing the stories and landscapes along the original Pony Express trail and directing the cinematic reenactment scenes that brought the history to life.

Result: "Spirit of the Pony Express" was successfully completed, transforming a personal passion project into a finished feature film. The documentary's quality and heartfelt storytelling earned it significant recognition, culminating in an invitation to the 2013 Sundance Film Festival to co-host a special event with The Gentle Barn. This achievement marked the project's journey from a simple idea to a celebrated film recognized within the independent film community.
